Beer is such a deliciously beautiful and complex beverage! Originating in Mesopotamia around 5,000 years ago, beer is considered one of the oldest beverages (mead may very well be older). Did you know Ninkasi is the ancient Sumerian goddess of beer? I love the fact that women were the first to brew – they were called Brewsters! I consider myself lucky to live during a time when I can enjoy such an evolving variety of styles.
My husband and I celebrate this drink in its entirety. When we first started dating (2003-ish) we both agreed that beer was pretty darn good. In fact, I remember some pretty great dates together that included some delicious German beers! We even served Hofbrau beer at our wedding. When we bought our little house in 2009 we decided the first thing we would build would be a German Biergarten in our back yard. Yea – that’s how much we both love German beers! When we moved to our new neighborhood we found that there weren’t many places to go to sample craft beers. Then we found a little pizza place down the way from our house that had some great stuff on tap (and the pizza was good, too – bonus!). That’s where I decided to start a little beer diary to keep track of all of our samples. Of course this was before the popular app Untappd rolled out. Over time, more bars and restaurants around town started putting better beer on tap. And thank goodness they did! My little beer diary exploded.
About the same time that we bought our house, my husband decided to give homebrewing a whirl and made a batch with a friend. After that first batch, he was hooked. He found a local homebrew supply store and made friends with the brew-expert there and the rest of the story is history! Actually, it was a slippery slope of new equipment at first but now we have a small batch brewery in our basement. Fifty-ish batches later and he makes some of the best beer in town (in my completely biased good wife opinion). We joined a homebrew club and met tons of other folks that love beer and brewing beer as much as we do.
Over the years we have joined the ever growing group of people who love a good tasting brew. The choices available are through the roof these days and beer flows from taps like water. Now when we visit a new city, we look for a brewery first. Breweries are popping up all over the place and our city is no exception. We’ve exploded with 12 or 13 new breweries in less than 3 years. Luckily for me, there are some really awesome beers crafted right in my home town and within a few miles of my house. Not only have new breweries popped up, but there are tons of beer festivals and beer tasting events, too. This is a good time to enjoy beer.
Since I love beer a whole bunch, I thought it might be fun to start a little weekly post dedicated to the beverage. I’m usually thinking about beer on Friday’s anyway so why not blog about it for a bit? I realize that there are a ton of places to go on the “internets” to read up on beer and I will be the first to admit I’m not an expert on the subject. But if I can help you either dip a timid toe or jump in head first into a new style or share some insight beer that you didn’t know before, then my Beer Fun Friday! posts have been successful!
